I think it's worth the commitment of time and attention, and I haven't read any reviews from any of my friends. And the experience was generally positive. I can imagine that as a book 2666 would present a huge challenge to me, because it's very testing in places. There is something about it in this novel that made it feel at times more real than real and more true than life itself. 10:28 am - 2666 by Roberto Bolaño 2666 is a massive novel, and it's translated from Spanish. Roberto Bolaño died shortly after presenting the first draft of 2666 to his publisher, Anagrama. I'd say further, among many other attributes, that both novels offer nice examples of viable political fiction, contrary to certain claims. Facetious, I know, but hey, I got through the book. I'd say 2666 stands with the very short By Night in Chile as the best of these. It was reported that he was not completely finished writing or editing the novel at the time of his death. When Roberto Bolaño, a Chilean writer seemingly destine for a Nobel Prize had he not passed away so unjustly at the age of 50, chose to use Detroit as a setting in his near-universally acclaimed final novel 2666. Perhaps the first online group read of the novel was the "National Reading '2666' Month", a month-long reading by The New Yorker (The Book Bench) in January 2009.
