Designed for a first course in real variables, this text encourages intuitive thinking and offers background for more advanced mathematical work. One of the things that topologists like to say is that a topological set is just a set with some structure. Here's my more modern topological interpretation of this claim. I am assuming that the reader is familiar with the terms metric, metric space, topological space, and compact set. The psyche is spatial, just not in topographical terms. Metrics have to do with the distance between points, and are everywhere defined. For an application of this, it would be very interesting to provide a suitable metric of the "distance" between two languages in a language space. Very little has been written, it seems, about the topology of language spaces. For Jacques Lacan many of the psychic operations that Freud described (such as the transference) are better understood in terms of topological operations.
